To give this two-room bachelor’s apartment a much needed update and a more spacious feel we removed a wall between the kitchen and living room and redesigned the kitchen with space saving appliances such as an undercounter refrigerator drawer, a two-burner gas cooktop and a small diagonal corner sink. We used white, contemporary cabinetry and a tin, ceiling tile backsplash for a more modern look. To reflect the homeowner’s lifestyle as a piano player we used soapstone countertops with contours to match those of a baby grand piano in the living room. An open-backed shelf unit functions as a wineglass holder and bookshelf to unite the kitchen with an adjacent seating area without creating an obtrusive divider and without wasting valuable storage space.
